Lid off always.
Easy to do, you just open and lift off.
No marks on my plinth and even if there were i wouldn't worry about it as the hinge sockets are always there.
I don't have cats.

If you have a clear lid and must use it down?
Fold a white drying up cloth/tea towel in half then into quarters and lay it on top of the lid. :smt023

A towel is used because it makes it sound better I've done it in the past and it works. A bit of muffling give the oomph to the bass. That's why a lot of drummers use a slightly damp towel inside their drums. :smt023

Only on clear lids.
Put it in the middle and let a few inches hang over the front.
Unless you are stone deaf? You will hear a difference.
Its up to you if you like the difference?
