Obsolete parts often fitted to the LP 12. Help and requests.

Post by Mr Fixit » Sat Jul 02, 2016 2:57 pm

Over the past five or six years we have been particularly successful in persuading manufacturers such as Linn to modify some of their existing products (Ekos Se/1 larger head-shell) and produce new products (Keel/A. Kore/A, Kore Old Rega and Rega fit plus Kore for SME also heavy counterweight for Ekos arms) which mean their products have a wider appeal for LP 12 users and who are not necessarily using Linn arms or cartridges which is really great! We have also seen several third-party manufacturers Tiger Paw in particular, over the last few years help us with the manufacture of useful spare parts: The Skale range of mass-loadable counterweights the Elevator arm lift for the Aro and of course the Vulcan turntable wall shelf (saving us hunt down old Audiotech wall shelves for our LP12s) as well!

It occurred to me some time ago that this process should go further and particularly with the discontinuation of the Naim Aro tonearm and the subsequent lack of a of availability of some of the parts, that now was the time to approach a few helpful third-party manufacturers Like Johnnie at Audio Origami and Roger at Tiger Paw with a view to getting some replacement parts manufactured so as we can all continue to enjoy using our Aros. Of course the same is true with some of the older Linn arms, as there are certain components which once broken or lost, people are finding it very difficult to get replaced as Linn and consequently Linn Specialist Retailers no longer have these parts. Indeed, Johnnie from Audio Origami is well known here for his posts and his reputation for being able to repair many older arms including Linn Basik, Akito 1 and Ittoks etc. Arms that without his help, would be heading for the dust bin!

My suggestion for this thread is that if you feel there is a genuine need for a component no longer available, why not post your comments here and maybe if there is enough interest, we can get something done about it!

In the meantime and to start the ball rolling so to speak; here are two examples of new spares items which are now available which hopefully will get owners out of the mess of not being able to find spare parts on the used market. Others will follow including a replacement Naim Aro arm lead and head-shell finger-lift shortly.

The first product I identified a need for, was the Aro armrest as Naim discontinued this and no longer have stock, fairly rapidly after the discontinuation of the arm.

Here's the original with the replacement Johnnie7 made for me (the original is above and replacement part below) :

As you may know, when the Aro Keel came along I felt it reduced the arm rest resonation in the original rest, to use heat-shrink on the horizontal part of the rest to dampen this and so may will be familiar with Aro arm rests looking like this one pictured below. Again, original above and the replacement below:

You will notice the end stop is larger than the original, it is also glued on rather than turned down from a single pin. The reasons for this are three-fold:
1) Price (relative ease of manufacture)
2) This method of attachment will help avoid the pin resonating as much as the original.
3) Given the end stop is small on the original and a larger end stop may be preferred (more lateral security for the arm on the rest). It is relatively easy to have this end stop specified with slightly a larger diameter if required!

And the price is £100.00 + VAT FYI

The second product where no spares are available any more unless you can find secondhand is with the Linn Ittok and the armrest is one of those products where it is very difficult to improvise!

As you can see, we have adopted an allen bolt to lock the height adjustment rather than the silver screw as with the original, this is just to keep costs to a minimum on this and so it may look more complicated to produce than the Aro rest (actually that wasn't the case) but we have been able to keep the same at the same price of £100.00 + VAT.

Obviously these particular spare parts are of limited interest, but at least replacements are now available and it would be good to spread the word here on this thread if you can think of or find any other useful replacement parts.

Hope this will be of use and please post your thoughts and suggestions.

Best regards,

Peter

To be totally honest, now you can buy a Aro arm rest on its own.
I wouldn't bother with the Ittok clip in rest.
I would rather use the Aro arm rest.
People with steady hands might even find loosing/removing the built in arm lifts and rests from other Linn arms a bonus now. :smt023

Interesting and it does lead me into a question given one member/owner I know has modified his Aro rest to have a retaining clip for the arm tube as well.....

Would a retaining clip at the end of the Aro version of the rest be of interest?

Peter,
You would probably have to shorten the Aro arm rest pillar at the top for a Aro to sit level in the clip?
