Balancing Akito

Post by Pediatrik » Thu Sep 22, 2016 9:03 pm

I have an embarassing problem. Peter has asked me to check the lateral bearing friction of my Akito. He told me that I should balance the arm with anti-skate set at zero. The problem is I have never done such a thing and I have'nt got a clue how to revert the arm into the current tracking force after such a test...

Here are som pics:

The cartridge I'm using is Adikt.

Here you go.

Lock the arm in the rest then turn bias to 0 same with tracking weight the carefully take the arm ove the platter " not moving " then if balanced the arm should float level and not pull into the spindle or out to the arm rest if all is good moving the arm parallel should have no resistance or sticks or noise like clicks then if all is well balance arm then dial in the numbers job done. 8) :smt023

Thanks Jim! Do you know where 0 is on the Akito tracking weight?

If its just to test the friction use your stylus guard for safety. If to perform a reset then Jim dialled it in with his post.
Pun intended!

This is what Peter wrote:
If you set the arm in balance with a stylus cover on (for protection) with anti-skate set at zero too, then you can test the freedom of movement vertically and horizontally.

A picture says a thousand words.

The stylus guard will add a little bit of weight but better than broken
Hope this helps 8) :smt023

Jeez, still don't get it...

What is the tracking weight set to in my picture? 2.3?

Yep it looks a bit heavy for an Adikt 1.5 - 2.0 with the nominal being 1.75 is recommended.
turn the weight anti clock wise until at 0 or floating then when floating level with 0 at the top turn clockwise to the desired number.
You can do it. 8) :smt023

Done! No sticky bearing. :D

The question now is if I should return to 2.3 as before or if I should go for the recommended 1.75?! And shouldn't tracking force and anti-skate/bias be set to the same value? In my case it seemed to be 2.3 and 2.0... :smt017

I wouldn't track at 2.3 I'm not sure why it was set like that.
I would set it at 1.75 then possibly just try it by ear up and down 0.5 and set the bias the same.
Take that as a default idea.
The opinions on this kind of tweaking is endless but too heavy is increasing stress and wear on the stylus and cantilever and suspension.
Good luck and enjoy. 8) :smt023
