Sticking stylus - ugh

Post by vincent » Sun Oct 28, 2018 6:02 pm

Here’s an odd one I’ve not come across before.

The problem is mis-tracking on side 1 track 5 (‘Better Get it Right the First Time’) of a brand new copy of Rhiannon Giddens' Freedom Highway. The stylus gets ‘stuck’ (its a skip back rather than a skip forward) at exactly the same place on every playing. The rest of the album tracks perfectly.

The deck is a Linn Klimax LP12 with Ekos SE/1 and Lyra Kleos SL. Setup has been checked (level, tracking force, vta, anti-skate) and all is correct. Such mis-tracking occurs on no other record in my collection (the Kleos SL is an excellent tracker)

The recording and pressing are otherwise excellent - it is not ‘dished’ or warped
The record has been cleaned, and there are no visible defects on the vinyl
The mis-tracking can be avoided by dialling down anti-skate from 1.75 to 0.5
Increasing tracking force makes no difference
The rest of the album sounds fine with anti-skate at 0.5.

I’m assuming that the explanation is a pressing defect in the depth of the groove such that centripetal force (i.e. pressure on inside track wall, with no anti-skate applied) is necessary for the stylus to get past this one particular point.

I’m reluctant to return the record due to hassle (it was mail order), and the likelihood that a replacement will be the same or worse.

Anyone out there with similar experience? :smt013

How strange. No, I have never heard of that before. Is it a particularly highly modulated part of the album?

Hi,
A long time ago I had a similar problem with a Joni Mitchell album " Mingus "
The very same thing would happen only at one point on only this album.
It's irrelevant what I was using but it was Heybrook TT2 with Mission 774 with an AT31E
I got another copy and was exactly the same so I did without the album.
There is no way I would fudge the setup on a deck like yours simply to play one dodgy album I'd rather forego the album.
What I didn't do was try the album on another deck but the point was it wasn't happening on mine so goodbye album.
Any hassle of the mail order wouldn't come into with a deck of that spec.
Weird stuff does happen though.
So it would be a one time replacement or forget the album. 8) :smt023

Any mistracking I have had on an Album causes a skip back. Never had one skip forward. I agree with others though, send it back. Your only other option is to keep it with the fault.

I assume you have put it through a record cleaner. Sometimes that is good enough to allow the stylus to miss the problem.
LP12 (now with the special Peter Swain magic touch and a Kore and T-Cable) for analogue, Majik Aktiv System for digital

Either send it back or try something else.

If you can identify the area that it occurs then soak it in fluid and give it a scrub with a carbon fibre stylus brush ( like the Dynavector one)

If you are lucky then it might dislodge some stubborn residue that is in the groove. Then clean it with your RCM

If that doesn’t work - send it back.

It’s a flaw in the vinyl, not your deck. Don’t compromise an expensive stylus on one album.

Just received another copy via Amazon after returning duff one to HMV, and guess what - it has the same defect, in exactly the same place :smt013 :smt017

I'm not going to try sticking a 50p piece on the Ekos headshell. So this copy is going straight back also.

(It's not a highly modulated part of the album, Mr Onion. And the Kleos SL anyway is a superb tracker even with the most difficult material - better even than the standard Kleos which I thought pretty good).
