Majik Tonearm

Post by Coyote Jim » Sat Dec 15, 2018 4:16 pm

A new budget "Linn" tonearm has been sneaked in under the radar into the accessory line up.
It's called the Majik and from information around it seems to be a Jelco reincarnation similar to their SA-250-ST that has been discontinued so looks like a buy up or redevelopment rebranding exercise.
Straight tube variant of the SA-250 tonearm, a design found fitted as original equipment on numerous turntables.

Features include a fixed-headshell and calibrated VTF and bias adjustment.

Specifications

Type: static balance straight pipe type

Holding mechanism: one point cross suspension type

Effective length: 228mm

Overhang: 18mm

Mounting distance: 210mm

Mounting hole: 30mm

Bearing friction: 20mg

Suitable cartridge weight: 4 to 12g

Range of height adjustment: 39 to 60mm
No price as yet but the Majik LP12 as it now comes on is the same price as when it had the Project arm on it.
I must say this looks far more business like and makes a starter LP12 look far more appealing than it did.

Hi Dan.
It would make the starter cost far too expensive the project that used to come with it retails for about £450 this will probably be about the same.
The Akito is grossly overhyped and priced for what it is it'll never be any old Ekos replacement.
It used to be be the budget arm before the holes in the range left by the Ittok so they had to make it that price £1630 At last price list. :smt005
IMHO. :p
For the money and provenance of the new arm I'd have it instead of the Project or the Akito.
In fact I used to have it as a Mission 774 LC the budget one of the two they did. 8) :smt023

Wouldn't a Rega RB300 be a better option?

Hi Clive,
I've never had a Rega arm but know they are well favoured.
I think the option they're looking at is its the same as linn fit all the way through now.
Majik, or Akito on Majik sub or Kore then the Ekos for Keel.
Majik on a keel would be an interesting one if it fits because the Akito won't fit Keel with its cueing device.
Ooh the possibilities. 8) :smt023

Hi, the new Rega 3 point fitting is different actually and the effective length of their arms is different as well.

I'm not sure why they didn't get together as the Regas are great VFM arms and it wouldn't be that difficult to have made a version with a different effective length one would think!........... Maybe that was the issue as both Project and Jelco seem to have been happy to make these changes! :?
