What Are You Listening to Now? August 2015

Post by 3½ Sport »

This was waiting for me on the doorstep yesterday, one grail I can now cross off. Atlantic SD8214, still in shrinkwrap and including the original inner.

By comparison, the 4MWB reissue sounds spittier but I only A/Bd an inner track. The original has a more homogenous sound. Has a few scratches but so did the great woman herself. I'm pidly happy with that.

Newly arrived black ff.

Another ethereal voice (which seems to be whats 'doing it' for me these days)

(Great guy to deal with. He even removes the records from the outer sleeve to protect it in transit. He's got some great music there too)

Ibeyi - Vinyl

This is an interesting mix of chants, jazz and odd other bits of Cuban-ness. The instrumentation is quite sparse (percussion aside) with vocals well to the fore. It is an interesting paradox in some ways; some of the jazz elements offer a slick and more complex feel, there's the blend with more earthy rhythms, but there's a slight rawness to the production which makes it all very immediate. It's certainly hard to pigeon hole. As such I'd be cautious in some ways of giving the work a wholehearted recommendation unless I knew someone's tastes fairly well; but I love it! :smt020
