Who Remembers early encounters ?

You mean there's more to HiFi than a LP12?

I started with one of these Sanyo Music Systems before moving on to separates. 8)

Dan,
That's really freaked me out the first picture I started the thread with was a random image of the deck one of my mates and I had but his dad had the Sanyo music centre in the living room for all his Deutsch Gramofon records so every time he was out at work we got to use the " big " music centre we thought it was the bees knees. :smt005

I had one of these beneath my Rega 8)

Big enthusiasts interest in these I've seen forums with whole restoration threads.
When I was selling them we used to be able to buy the timber sleeves as an accessory. 8) :smt023

Cracking amp Jim I had a spare timber one Doug Brady threw it in when I bought it with the Rega 3 and a pair of Mission speakers. Nice system 8)

It sounds like you started halfway up the tree, Jim. It was a BSR for me, similar to the 'Fidelity' pictures above. On some highly modulated discs I put a 50p coin on the headshell in order to try to get it to track without jumping. [I still have one such record, which makes a unique noise at that point now!] But it got me into music and that's more important than the equipment.

Now we are talking Jim! My parents actually had something similar, Telefunken was the brand I think with a Dual turntable integrated. Always liked the green display lights!

But didn't we all have loads of fun out of these early players and music systems? I certainly did. Do I get as much enjoyment today when listening on equipment costing more than the UK median annual salary? It's difficult to measure enjoyment, but it's an interesting question, and one which would make an interesting PhD thesis.

True Clive! I also guess that we all have had one period in our life when we consumed nothing but music. In my case it was when I was in my early twenties and coincided with the purchase of Basik/Akito/K5 and Intek, a rather big performance leap from my former Hitachi stuff...

I started at about age 5 with a Ferguson radiogram and at the age of about 12 was bought an Aiwa 5080 with turntable, cassette and radio. When Mr C and I met we pooled our systems and started down the slippery slope of separates - more years ago than either of us care to remember. I have fond memories of my Aiwa - it took me from pop to punk and everywhere in between. I was really sad when the cassette deck finally gave up and I had to get rid of it.

I went from a stereo (won't call it HIFI) that I purchased when I was about 16 (can't even remember the name of it) before that it was just my parents' Hitachi "music centre". When I was about 23 I decided it was time to get something "proper" so went and got some hifi porno mags and started to investigate eventually deciding that a Linn seemed like a good idea and probably an Axis would fit the bill. So off I went to Audi T in West Hamstead to have a chat. After a brief discussion...didn't want a cdp at the moment as I had "loads" of vinyl (to my eyes anyway) The guy I was talking to then asked THE question...how much do you want to spend. I had about a grand and thought an axis was in my budget. To my surprise I was told I could have an LP12 with Moth and K9, Cyrus 1mk2 and Linn Index for that money, shocked I arranged a demo the following weekend. I listened to both Axis and LP12 and came away with the latter (obvs!)
Still have the same LP12 sort of as I don't think any of the original parts are still there, I still have the top plate and plinth but they're not being used. Amp went over 20 years ago replaced with 32.5, Hicap, 140 as did the speakers.

Audio T in west Hampstead was where I got my Celef Domestic Monitor Improved from back in the late 70's. Gave me a handful of QED 79 strand as a leaving present.

Nice memories
