Lp12 Assembly Journey

Post by Shihlp12 »

Hello Everyone,

I’ve got Peter’s manual open on a tablet and have begun assembling the LP12 sent by my dealer.
Will document the journey here and hopefully get by without too much damage.

Thank you for the encouragement.

I’ve noticed the motor is wobbly. This is a video of me holding it in my hand. Please don’t mind my daughter’s voice in the background. There is no mention of how to tackle this in the manual.

Is it really supposed to be this wobbly?

I agree with CJ, there is no way it should be like that. I have no idea how it could have got so bent either, certainly one for your dealer to sort out as there is no way you (or anyone else) could straighten it now

He replied saying he will replace it.

Dealer is requesting to put together the rest and check if anything else is damaged so he can replace it all in one go.

Will take a video once it’s all put together.

Good news
It might be worth listing all you have for the build type of spec including bearing sub chassis arm cartridge etc it all helps with potential questions.

Also remember, the Radikal Powersupply and the Motor are issued with the same serial number, so you will have to returnthe whole Radikal package

Got it. I’ll prepare to pack. Both power supply and motor.

The dealer sent these:

Sondex LP12
Kore
Lingo 4
Trampolin
Arko
Kendo

Ahh, thats a Lingo 4 motor not a Radikal. My mistake. In that case I am not sure if the items are serial number matched or not. Best check with your dealer before you send it all

Dealer said no need to send back the power supply.

New motor and board arrived today. Replaced the old motor and board and ran it a bit.

It doesn’t seem to be reaching 45rpm.

The weight of the phone will have unbalanced the platter making any measurement totally unreliable

You are better off with a proper strobe disk, one of which can be downloaded from 50hz/60hz Strobe Discs

(plus I think you mean 33.3 as indicated by the red led)

Not a good way to try and check speed. :smt018
It’s a big learning curve. :smt017
I have a horrible feeling about that phone flying off and hitting something.
A strobe disc is the usual way to do this but mostly only on the old AC motor.
There is no speed adjustment on the DC motors it’s all done electronically tachometer style.

Yes, it’s stuck at 33.3 even if I’m trying to play at 45.

Yes , dealer sent a new board, motor and sensor.

I’ve been letting it run for at least 5 minutes. It’s still at 33.3 though.

You have to start it on 33 then when the light dims switch to 45.
Two questions that pop up with this issue are does the outer platter have its black marker on it for the sensor and is the bearing oil up to the correct level as drag can cause issues.
Leaving it on 45 will do nothing unless calibrated and stabilised first on 33.

That’s exactly what I was wondering. But then I thought, how would it even stabilise at 33 rpm without the black stcky square? Maybe that’s why it’s taking so long.

I would add that the underside of the platter needs to be clean and bright, so there is a high enough level of contrast between the tape and the platter. I had this problem when I had a Lingo 4 and had to clean the platter and fit new tape. However, I assume yours is a new deck, so should be nice and shiny. The other thing that springs to mind is the tape - I have heard a rumour of problems with the tape and Linn finding a new supplier. Possibly the edge of the tape was no longer precise enough to trigger the reader.

I once got told by a dealer got a Radikal LP12 in for inspection as it had dodgy calibration.
When he took the platter off instead of the little square on the inner rim the whole strip of supplied strip was used going round a third of the inner platter. :smt005
