Internal power supply with Karousel bearing

Post by El Exigente »

For aesthetic reasons, I’d like a one box LP 12 with an internal power supply. When using the Karousel bearing, neither the Hercules nor the Valhalla fit because of the bearing’s larger diameter.

Do forum members know of any internal power supply that would fit when a Karousel bearing is installed? Thanks in advance.

Thank you all for your very helpful answers. I’ll look into the Minos

The Majik supply is only one speed if I remember correctly, which is why I had not considered originally.

I have no experience with this but the Vinyl Passion Revolution fits what you are looking for. Russ Andrews seems to like it and it is listed as being compatible with the Karousel. It seems it would be worth checking out, they certainly make some strong claims for it.

The Valhalla and Hercules will actually fit over the Karousel but it's a close fit! Linn are concerned about the potential for a short between the board and the bearing/platter, so outlawed this combination. The risk was always there with the Valhalla and previous bearings, it's just a bit greater with the Karousel fitted. The VP products appear to be a good solution.

Between the VP and the Minos I would take the VP, between VP and Zeus definitely the Zeus. If I was to buy another one I would only consider Zeus or Zeus external. FWIW, my opinion is based on my experience as a current owner and user of both, VP and Zeus external.

Good to hear from you llatpohf. Would you mind elaborating on your preference for the VP over the Minos? Thanks.

Everything from the PC board fit and finish, placement of components, wire connectors, switches, etc on the Vinyl Passion oozes quality in a way Valhalla Electronics boards can't match. The VP Revolution also runs cold, the Valhalla Electronics generates heat even powered off, not as bad as the Linn Valhalla but it still gets warm. On the other hand, the automatic speed correction makes a big audible difference that tips the scale in favor of the Zeus, IMO.

Thank you. That’s very helpful.

Don’t the Minos and VP also have (manual) speed adjustment?

Hi,

The original Linn Valhalla clearance is too small and electronics will be too close for comfort against the Karousel bearing. I did once tried adjusting the suspension of an LP12 with a Valhalla power supply, its doable, but the slighest touch will cause the bearing to hit the Valhalla, and there is a high risk of electric shock if a component fails. Several 3rd party power supplies have modified their board layouts to increase clearance and safely to allow the use of a Karousel bearing.
