Re: How to build an LP12
Thanks @evil_C for showing me your superb system yesterday, and your advice.
I've slept on it and, you can probably guess, I'll be going on my original plan, starting with Majik and Lingo and building up from there.
Have to say those 808s are beautiful
One question. I found the Katie Melua (not on qobuz though, and I have most tracks on other albums but not that one!), but I can't remember the Ane Brun album you played?

Re: How to build an LP12
It was good to meet you yesterday. I have just looked at the Linn price list and found that the price of the deck only is £2,160. That would allow you to choose the finish you desire and you could then add components from there. If these were pre-used components (e.g. Kore) I’m sure you could end up with a higher spec turntable than a Majik. But never mind, you seem to have made your mind up and no doubt a Majik LP12 will be a significant improvement on what you have today.timster wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 6:03 am Thanks @evil_C for showing me your superb system yesterday, and your advice.

The Ane Brun album was Leave Me Breathless.
Adding all the components separately (and sourcing them) is just too much hassle for me, let alone the distance. How would I get the Lingo4 to him for instance. Then there's subchassis, arm, cartridge, platter, cables...and I've probably forgotten stuff. Sure, for the same money I could get a better spec to start but that's part of the fun, for me anyway. Majik spec plus Lingo and Trampolin will do me fine as a base - adding/upgrading things over time if needs be or I get an urge...fun fun fun

Knowing what I know now I’d have no problem going to Peter and ordering a Pik N Mix deck to my budget.

Exactamundo. But it's not only that I don't currently have a car, I'd rather someone local to be able to come over with fixes/uogrades or whatever. They are happy to come 9 miles to collect, even if only for a minor thing.Wenge1 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 11:40 am.Coyote Jim wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 11:31 am Knowing what I know now I’d have no problem going to Peter and ordering a Pik N Mix deck to my budget.

We even agreed the streaming vs vinyl war was a draw. One in particular, Rickie Lee Jones was much better streaming. Most others were vice-versa (imo).
As Clive has an all analogue path for his (lovely) LP12 it's not really the same as mine but still, interesting.

Re: How to build an LP12
Order In!
Majik LP12, ex power supply and motor, in Rosenut, plus Trampolin.
Lingo 4 on the way
Even adding 2nd hand parts of the same level to the basic mechanicals came to more than the Majik package. It's a good deal less than the sum of its parts.
So I'll be getting a new LP12 with a Lingo 4 for ~4.5k.

Going from what you currently have to what you will be getting will be the biggest single jump in vinyl SQ you will experience. Should you go up the LP12 chain in the future you will get further and worthwhile improvements but nothing is likely to match the change you are about to experience. So just enjoy ........

Re: How to build an LP12
Excellent result - you’ll enjoy it for sure.
A radio one DJ did one of those double blind listening tests of 3 decks - LP12, Technics and another I can’t recall. She was able to pick out the LP12 easily as the best sounding source. I think the experiment was supposed to show you couldn’t hear a difference, but she most definitely could.
Having owned 4 TT brands over the years Garrard, Rega, Nottingham Analogue and LP12, I can attest they were all very good, but the LP12 is the most musical. In fact each change was an upgrade in sound quality. I’ve upgraded the LP12 over the years something I couldn’t do with the others. In strange way, I’m pleased upgrades have become expensive as it has helped me stay with and enjoy what I have and even with a Krystal, I’m ecstatic.

Re: How to build an LP12
Congratulations.
I bought my first LP12 42 years ago. A decision that I never regretted. I’ve made some bad choices in life but that like choosing my wife was a good one.
Your new one is going to sound a lot better than mine did then. You’re going to love it.
I did make a big mistake five years ago when I sold it. Fortunately, I’ve got another one now, so all is as it should be again.
Maybe, there’s lots of other excellent turntables around, but I didn’t feel the need to look any further than the Linn Sondek because it’s been a big part of life.
There’s something special about vinyl records, particularly when played on an LP12.
