Here’s another picture taken when it was right up next to the glass. We first saw it hanging upside down at the end of the greenhouse. We asked several experts about it. They concluded that it had flown in there and tried to fly through the glass and had consequently stunned itself. It was still there the next morning, but eventually just flew out through the open door. A beautiful sight.

If you look closely in its eye you can see my reflection. I reckon he was weighing up his chances and trying to work out if there was enough flesh for a meal

Gents, they are stone cold Sparrow Hawks - Lovely bird of prey. You both have some great pics of them. We were lucky enough to have a pair of Hen Harriers around our place for about three weeks earlier in the summer. The pics below are not mine but they show you what a handsome bird they are.

This Coopers Hawk (AKA Big Boy) still stops by my patio once in a while for a happy meal.
Needless to say I stay inside when he visits.

In this shot I told him to squint his eyes a little to make him look like Clint Eastwood...

They are generally woodland residents but any handy copse that may be available will do. They are getting a bit wise to where birds are being fed as long as there is some tree cover within which they can hide, set an ambush and then swoop out on the prey. Their ability to fly in amongst dense trees and still chase down small birds has to be seen to be believed.

Other than the odd tree there are very few around here, very strange (unless he counts my two cobnut trees as a copse  )
