What headphones do you use?
After travelling alone (!) for a few days, I realise I need a decent pair of headphones instead of my crappy Apple in-ear thingies. Since I stream ”CD-quality”, ie 16bits 44,1kHz, via Qobuz on my iPhone, I think it may pay off to buy a good pair of on-ear/over-ear headphones. I’ve had a quick listen to Grado SR225 and PS500 and preferred the latter ones with a margin, but they do differ €550 in price...

Stax Electrostatic SRX III that I bought back in the mid 70's.
AKG K-340 when I need dynamic headphones, but I still prefer the Stax.
Etymotic Research ER-4P in the ear earphones when running on the treadmill, but I still prefer the Stax.

Original 1978 Fluted Afromosia LP12, Ekos 2, Lyra Kleos SL and lots of other stuff from the 70's that still work fine.

I use Shure ES535, I think that’s the number. There are in ear and they come with three size sleeves (buds). It’s important to get the right fit once you do they are excellent. They are not noise cancelling more using ear plug method of reducing surrounding noise. The wire is reinforced to fold over your ears taking the wire behind your back. I use them with the iPhone, iPad and an MP3 Sony Walkman which I still think is far better than to Apple products.

The downside with the Grados is that they are ”open design” ie they do not reduce any surrounding noice. Something that can come in handy when flying. Especially from my home town, since it only is operated by propeller aircraft.

I understand what you mean for flying I use the Sony headphones which are noise reducing. Prop planes are really noisy, not done many trips but did use earplugs instead

I still love my Walkman. Can’t remember the model number now of that or my earphones and so won’t recommend but it prompts a memory. We were travelling to the US and I had been using my newly bought Sony cancelling headphones (to listen to movies and ‘tunes etc’) which at the time were pricey but very effective and bought the week before on a HK work trip where I could kid myself they were surely a bargain
I had gone to the loo before landing and upon return my beloved had packed everything away as we prepared for descent. It was only when we got to the Hotel that I asked where she had packed the earphones and she went pale as she realised that they were mine and not the airline ones because she had handed them back in! Never did get them back but I managed to hold back the tears as we had a great holiday. Tad expensive as disposables.

I left a pair of Shure headphones on a tour boat in Croatia last year so I know the feeling all too well.

The thing about top quality headphones is they can sound so much better than any room speaker system and you don't get people next door or down the road moaning about one playing music to LOUD.

Re: What headphones do you use?
I've also got a top pair of Sennhizer radio Headphones that are great for walking around the home and outside cutting the grass hanging out the washing or cleaning the car.
Sitting on patio with a coffee.
Gave two pairs away to my kids but missed them and bought another set.
Use them for TV also late at night.

Audeze LCD3, are great.
If I were buying now I’d buy Quad: good as LCD3 & closet approach to original sound (https://www.pursuitperfectsystem.com/qu ... hones.html).
A couple of friends of mine love Focal headphones.
They are in the USA so Won't hold it against them.

Audeze are unfortunately a wee bit over my budget. Tried a pair of Focals last week, but found them a bit bass heavy, especially compared to the Grados. The Quads would be interesting to try. Magnetic eh?!

Re: What headphones do you use?
As already stated in the Music forum, I pulled the trigger on a pair of Grado PS500e. It was a no brainer actually. I did not have the chance to audition the recommended ones from Audeze or Quad, but instead I mbled across a pair of pre-loved Grados. Already broken in and asking price €300 instead of €700 for a new pair. As I said, a no brainer! Loving them already. Thank god there is no headphone output on my Akurate EDSM...
