It’s is worth looking up Charles Sobhraj whom it is based on. They say fact I stranger than fiction and in this case it really is.
Yes I have already done that and your so right Keith - Truly an unbelievable story but it did happen.

Watched this one recently and it’s very good, with a fine performance from Tom Hanks. 8)

Premise
In the aftermath of the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd drifts through northern Texas, performing live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world--of the Irish pouring into New York City, of the railroad driving into the new state of Nebraska, of an eruption of Popocatépetl near Mexico City. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain once made his living as a printer, until the War Between the States took his press and everything with it. Now, at seventy-one, he enjoys the freedom of the road, even if his body aches and money is scarce.
At a stop in Wichita Falls, Captain Kidd is offered a fifty-dollar gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives near San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders viciously killed Johanna Leonberger's parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as their own. Recently recovered by the U.S. Army, the ten-year-old with blue eyes and hair the color of maple sugar has once again been torn away from the only home and family she knows. The captain's sense of duty and of compassion propels him to accept, though he knows the journey will be long and difficult.
Winding through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain, the four-hundred-mile odyssey south proves dangerous as well. A corrupt Reconstruction administration runs the state government, and anarchy and lawlessness have taken hold. The captain must watch for thieves, Comanches and Kiowas, and the federal army--and corral the wild Johanna. Small and thin, the despondent child has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act "civilized." Yet as the miles pass, the wary Johanna slowly draws closer to the man she calls "Kep-dun," and the two lonely survivors forge a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land.
But in San Antonio another hurdle awaits, one that will force this respectable man to make a terrible choice that will determine Johanna's fate--and his own.
Unfolding in gorgeous prose, News of the World is a vivid portrait that captures a beautiful and hostile land, and a masterful eploration of the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust.

Have had my eye on the News of the World Movie and looking forward to it even more now. Tom Hanks rarely fails to provide entertainment and typically speaking chooses his movies well. Cheers

For some reason, every serious movie watching starts with a magnum and some sort of 'sucky' sweets to grab when that's gone down. I swear movie watching shortens lives..... I can't rationalise the behaviour but then why should I :)

Been enjoying this 9 part thriller, and it’s going to be on Sky Atlantic in March. Not to be missed 8)

Premise
When the teenaged son of a prominent New Orleans judge accidentally kills another teen in a hit-and-run, the judge urges him to turn himself in to the police, but changes his mind when he learns the victim was the son of a local mafia kingpin. The judge's attempts to dispose of the evidence leads to tragic consequences for another teen.

In the 1940s, Billie Holiday is targeted by the government in an effort to racialize the war on drugs, ultimately aiming to stop her from singing her controversial song, "Strange Fruit." The film can be a little uneven in parts but Andra Day brings the artist and person to stunning life. 8)

Just seen a TV ad for this and must say looks interesting and very gritty don't know when I'll get to see it but it's on the list.

Watched The Silencing (on Sky etc). It's another one set against a backcloth of beautiful scenery set in and around an indian reservation. Guy's daughter went missing and he never gets over it, break up etc and living in forest and the story unfolds from there as further missing girls/murders turn up. Lots of moments that I have probably seen before in other movies but inevitable to some extent. It was a reasonable movie. Not great, not poor.

We watched New Mutants, the latest Marvel movie. A bit like the above, it was an OK movie but lacks the punch of the Thor, Iron Man and Avengers titles. Felt more like the set-up movie of a TV series if I am honest. Not sure about the mutants themselves which seem to be almost omnipotent before they start if you consider their powers and yet there is one that simply turns into a fairly standard wolf and that's it. But I didn't let that bother me too much.

Suspect both of these may depend on the mood you are in.

Not a big TV watcher but if you like dark comedy try Barry on Sky. It's about a hit man who accidentally finds himself in an acting class in LA. Some brilliant twists and turns. Plus a great supporting role performance from Henry Winkler.

A woman in her sixties who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. Frances McDormand's performance is excellent it will resonate with all who watches this film. 8)

Keith,
“Nomadland” will premiere on Disney Plus in the U.K. on April 30, Searchlight Pictures has announced. The Golden Globe-winner (Best Motion Picture – Drama) will be made available on the Star strand of the streaming platform, which launched last month to host adult-focused productions.
Disney said the film will be made available to cinemas when they re-open but that is not expected to be before May 17.

SWMBO tells me that when she was on holiday as a child her Mum couldn't decide whether to go see the Sound Of Music or the Beatles who were playing the Tower ballroom in Blackpool the same night. She said the sound of music was her favourite film but....

My mum took my sister to see in it when it was on the flicks in 65. I was in Alder Hey Hospital recovering from leg damage so I couldn’t go. She bought my sister the LP and I was sick of hearing it so I made my mind up not to watch it. But I decided yesterday see it, and I’m not ashamed to say I enjoyed it. I watched Citizen Kane, which was broadcast last night on BBC4. It’s the first time I’ve seen it, but it’s so highly regarded that it felt like one of those films you have see at least once in your life. Well, what a waste of two hours of my life that was!

I still don’t understand the relevance of ‘Rosebud’.
