Hello Garry. Welcome to the HiFi Kabin. Beware especially the two Jims. They're quite harmless, but will cost you a lot in new record purchases! :smt023

LDR preamps have always interested me but I have never heard one. Did you build it from the kit or buy it "ready to go"?

For those who don't know, in a LDR preamp the volume control adjusts the brightness of a LED.

The Resistor is between the input and output socket

The resistance of the resistor is proportional to the brightness of the LED, thus there are no moving parts in the volume part of the preamp.

Yes James you are quite right... No, it was not a kit... Would be pretty easy to build though... Have heard many resistor ladder preamplifiers and quality of surface mounted resistors usually better than the older type resistor. The Transformer operated preamps are very good as you are not reducing a full signal as with resistor ladder. You are using power as needed. My Anatek mb50's were designed for a passive preamp. But I have to say they work well with an old Audiolab 800A that I used with them at the beginning. I prefer the LDR as it just seems to give you warts and all... If it's a bad recording it's bad and if it's good its Bliss.

Don't tell Mrs O but at $750 (+ whatever the HMRC decide to relieve me of) its a pretty good price.

I could always make the backplate all DIN to suite my loom as well. :smt017 I am beginning to wish you hadn't posted now :smt005

Whats the USB port used for? EDIT If I read the manual I would know its for updates
