Karousel Bearing

Karousel, Linn’s new precision-engineered single-point bearing, offers smoother rotation and greater stability for even better sound from your Sondek LP12.
This innovative new take on our original bearing design has been made possible by technological developments in material science, machining capabilities and mechanical engineering expertise gained from almost half a century of designing and manufacturing the world’s best turntable. That vital union between the platter, spindle, bearing and sub-chassis is now the strongest we’ve ever achieved.
A new diamond-like carbon coating inside the bearing reduces friction between the tip of the spindle and the base of the bearing itself. This reduces the ‘noise floor’ of the turntable, so improves musical reproduction.
The substantial lock-nut fastening on the stainless steel housing increases rigidity at the critical point where bearing and sub-chassis come together. Enhancements to the base of the bearing include a stronger housing for the thrust pad, combined with a smaller, stiffer coated form, to improve the critical area that supports the platter rotation and mass, meaning your vinyl reproduction is more accurate and detailed than ever before.
With Karousel the reduction in friction means that not only will this critical component have a greater lifespan, but your LP12 will continue to give you incredibly accurate listening pleasure for longer than ever before.

BUGGER!, how much can I get for this kidney?

Seriously, I am glad that LINN are still improving the LP12. I assume its including a sub chassis as per the accepted maintenance.

Cue lots of second hand bearings appearing on ePay

Even with the previously current Cirkus bearing a sub chassis was no longer included it was just the bearing ,hub and belt.
I imagine this will be the same as no mention of a different hub spindle.
Oh the price £750 8) :smt023
I was thinking about a new bearing as mine is an original new Cirkus at the time.

Well I was going to get a new bearing when I upgrade the cartridge, mine being an original Cirkus from the mid-90s. And only a couple of hundred pounds more than the existing Cirkus bearing, this doesn’t seem too bad. I’ll have to plan a day in Rearsby.

Maybe we should plan a Kabin coach trip...

I was very impressed when I had my bearing replaced a few years ago so this should be very interesting.

One of the most famous turntables, the Linn Sondek LP12, can now have its bearing upgraded for the first time in 27 years. Linn says the Karousel bearing “will improve the performance of every Sondek LP12 turntable ever made”.
Linn also says that the bearing is central to the stability of the LP12 turntable and that the Karousel bearing is only the third evolution of this design in almost 50 years.
Image
Founder Ivor Tiefenbrun's unique single-point bearing, combined with the acoustic isolation of the turntable design, were the foundations on which Linn was established in 1973. The design even inspired the Linn company logo.
The 2020 design of the Karousel was only possible due to breakthroughs in material science and machining capabilities, along with what Linn has learned in almost half a century designing and manufacturing turntables.
According to Linn, “Karousel offers a more refined motion and greater stability, allowing an even better sound with a longer lasting design.”
The LP12 has become one of the most cherished turntables of the modern vinyl revival, and the ability to continue upgrading components allows the vinyl enthusiast to own an LP12 for their lifetime.
Image
Linn says this latest performance upgrade raises the bar for vinyl reproduction yet again and presents the opportunity for every LP12 owner to elevate the performance of their LP12.
Available from March 23rd, the Linn Karousel bearing upgrade kit sells for £750 RRP.
Plinth personalisation and monogram etching options are available for another £330 each.
All new LP12s will feature the new bearing as standard.

Greater Stability

A stronger coupling has been achieved between the platter, spindle, bearing housing and sub-chassis, thanks to the Stainless Steel material chosen and the new design implemented. A key part of this new design is the substantial lock-nut fastening which increases rigidity at what was previously the weakest point. A stronger housing for the thrust pad, combined with a smaller, stiffer form and the new coating improves the critical area that supports the platter rotation and mass. The combination of these changes leads to the reduction of noise for more accurate vinyl reproduction

Longer Lasting

Karousel’s reduction in friction means that it will last longer.

Easier To Service

The new lock-nut fastening method means quicker and easier removal and replacement without the need for the sub-chassis to be removed which affects suspension/tonearm setup. In addition, the removable ‘thrust pad cap’ allows draining, cleaning and close inspection of the critical pad surface of the bearing without removing it completely from the LP12.

The Personal Touch

Now with the addition of two personalisation options, LP12 owners can create a turntable that’s truly unique to them with the opportunity to match their plinth to any colour finish and to monogram their deck with up to 4 letters.
The same high gloss colour finishes are available for all Linn speakers, so customers can match their speakers to their deck to create a bespoke system.

Seems strange that its "easily removable" I would have thought that it would compromise rigidity. :smt017

... and how often would it need to be 'removed and replaced' anyway?

ANYWAY a day trip to Leicester will be planned, and its looking a great bit on engineering which I can't wait to see in the flesh.

It’s been suggested to me that fitting might not be included in that price. Be interested to hear how dealers approach this.

Dealers either didn't know or due to contractural agreements were sworn to secrecy until yesterday's announcement on the LINN website.

AFAIK LINN dealers have to sign a NDA for any new product that is then embargoed until its official release

The Karousel is available from March 23rd. Fitting costs are dealer and LP12 condition dependant (ie if your LP12 is in fine fettle its likely to cost less to fit the bearing than a LP12 that needs a lot of other work as well)
