Thanks very much for the welcome and the helpful comments! I have been offered a most excellent deal on the K + K and particularly in the light comments from of ex Tq enjoyers I phoned Loud and Clear Glasgow, to reserve the K and K. I had noticed that you Vincent seemed to hear what I heard with the Tq in an earlier post. But travel restrictions mean it may be some time before I go on the 200 mile round trip to get the happy work done. Don’t mind waiting since my deck sounds great already! Cheers guys and thanks again for the help.

Having been told I don't have to worry about this anymore, I'm still interested in what the Tq was doing to improve the Cirkus, and whether an appropriately implemented magnetic levitation design might similarly benefit the Karousel. Also what Linn thought of the Tq. :smt017

I was planning to put the Cirkus from my main deck into my study deck, but the difference that the Karousel makes is so profound that I’ve decided that the study needs a Karousel too :smt023

Or you could knock the top of the spindle off, invert it and there you have it - the Linn ashtray!

That’s what the Linn technician did to my pre-Cirkus inner platter

And here we have the second part of the Linn offer. I’ve tried to capture the ‘free’ Karousel bearing and the enabling Kandid in one shot:

Image

Yesterday afternoon, in pretty lousy driving conditions, I took the Aro for another trip up the Fosse Way to Cymbiosis to have the Kandid installed. It seemed pointless taking my turntable back as well just to have the height of the arm pillar adjusted to suit the new (taller) cartridge, since it had been set up just a week previously when the Karousel was installed. Peter gave me an extended lesson in setting the pillar height, as well as other general Aro set-up tips, so I could do it myself at home.

Below I show a couple of photos taken by Peter yesterday of the Kandid installation and how he managed to fit the four flying leads from the cartridge, together with the arm leads and connector pins in the small space between the rear of the cartridge and the front end of the arm tube. Neat job!

Image

Image

The Kandid is rather good, isn’t it?!

Great pictures and good to know the Kandid is rather good. I am interested to see what adjective(s) will most suit my forthcoming Karousel/Keel change from current Rubikon/Cirkus/Tq.... ‘slightly better’ ‘not bad’ ‘disappointing’ 🤔

It's just over two months since I had the Karousel and Kandid upgrades and I reckon I've used the LP12 for somewhere around thirty hours since, but I am beginning to wonder if my initial enthusiasm for the pair was more about expectation of what it ought to be able to do, than what it actually delivers. Most of the time my LP12 sits idle, being used perhaps once a fortnight, if that. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but what do others find? Do you honestly find the Karousel lifts the performance? Has it made you want to play more records?

Funnily enough when I was playing the Clifford T Ward this morning I thought how much better the Karousel is making it sound, and yes I want to use the LP12 more than my body is allowing me to. Even Mrs O has commented, so it can't just be my expectations.

I assume that you have tweaked the Tacking Force and Bias to see what changes they give (IIRC the Kandid is a bit sensitive when it comes to those)

That’s an interesting thought, James. I’ll get tweaking again. I have already described on another thread the issue about centre of gravity movement and balancing the Aro, but I shall have to bite the bullet and have another go. I think I’m currently tracking with a ‘measured’ force of 1.9mN.

That doesn't seem right at all. I can honestly say that the Karousel has brought a bigger performance improvement to my LP12 than any other upgrade over many years. My dealer down here in Brighton, who has fitted many, says that feedback from customers is highly positive at all spec levels. I'm playing more LPs than ever, including records I have neglected until now because I thought the pressing/recording not good enough. Maybe something to do with having to adjust to the effects of two upgrades at the same time? I doubt it though. If the improvement is not significant, I would get back to your dealer.

Totally agree and I’m buying more albums as well, which is a good thing as it’s keeping my figure in trim as I have to get up off my arse to turn them over. 8)

I completely agree as well - I'm using my LP12 basically just about everyday and loving the Karousel (and the Kandid for that matter). I could use my LP12 everyday but for the fact that time does always allow for this.

I’ve been thinking about what James said about how sensitive the Kandid is to tracking force. I think it likely that I might have been tracking with too high a force. The quoted range for the Kandid is 16.9-17.4mN (1.72-1.77g) and I had previously set the tracking force at 18.0mN to compensate for the fact that the level of the scale is higher than would be so for a record. I’ve now tweaked the tracking force down to 17.3mN (1.76g) at the level of the scales and am having another go. It’s surprising what difference a small reduction has on the performance of the Kandid. It sounds OK at the moment - I’m currently playing the AAM / Hogwood album which I posted on the What Are You Listening To thread.
