I’ve read a few and half way through the Flea autobiography. The first chapter shocked me because he says he was listening to the Unthanks sing and the beauty of their voices made him burst out crying. Not something I expected from a full blown rocker. The bottom of the pile is the fourth in a series by Ray Celestin. I have mentioned them before they are fiction based on fact around jazz musicians and jazz music. The last one featured heavily around Louis Armstrong. I haven’t read this one and I think it moves to LA. The books give you a feel of what the “scene” was like and life in general around the times of the stories. Recommend them as it put some light on the musicians lives.

About 1/3 of the way through this and I'm enjoying it. The style is very different to Harry Potter but it works in its own right.
They are good. The TV series was good as well.
I also enjoyed the TV series and it was the TV series that put me onto to books. Because of that I visualise the looks of the lead characters as they appeared on the screen - If you get what I mean.

The top book on that pile I have now read. I’m not a fan of the RHCP but I love to see where musicians get their inspiration. The shock with Flea is he was brought up by a jazz playing bass player. He played the trumpet and loves all the jazz legends. He set up a music school because kids don’t get chance to learn to play instruments like the chance he had.

Having gone through the last pile of books I have now started another. The book I’m currently half way through I can recommend for a good laugh is Miriam Margolyes This Much is True, her autobiography. If you have seen her being interviewed then you know what to expect.

I have belatedly 'discovered' the Rebus novels by Ian Rankin. Really enjoying them - brilliantly written IMHO. I started with the first and I'm currently on the seventh 'Let it Bleed'. And yes, both Ian Rankin and his character John Rebus are big Rolling Stones fans ......... :smt023

l used to call his books holiday reading because they always seemed to have been released just before we went on holiday. One of my retirement n decisions was to read them again and it was a good decision. As CJ says Ian Rankin is an LP12 owner. There is also a comment in one of the books that Rebus would love to own one. I believe, not 100% sure, he Rankin was also a hi-fi critic years back. The thing I've enjoyed is that time wise the books have kept to where Rebus would be in his life, he has aged as the books were released.

Your right - Ian Rankin did use to write for one (or more) of the HiFi press back in the day. Nowadays, he could buy them all up ........ :smt005

It's a good observation about the character John Rebus aging roughly in time with the release of the novels - The topics covered as part of the story lines were part of the zeitgeist of the time each novel was released. Rankin is a very clever guy who also manages to get in some very humorous lines too ......... :smt023

Nice one Jim - I'm not on Twitter and so would not ever see that. In the days when I used to sometimes work from home I was exactly the same as Rankin; CD playing and not LP12.

Featuring transcriptions of the unedited session tapes; in-depth interviews with musicians; freshly discovered Columbia Records files; never-before-seen photographs, and more, Kind of Blue is a vital piece of music history-and will be essential for fans and scholars for years to come.
