For me this was a great heads up. The last time I looked at SSD’s a 2tb m.2 card was over £200. This week I bought a WD 2TB for £88 and enclosure for £28. I have copied my music onto it (1.3tb) and have started using it as my source. My concerns were that they run hot, it did get very warm when I was transferring the files but in normal use it gets no warmer than the Mac mini it’s connected to. The transfer was so fast, about two hours as I did it in stages not everything in one go. So I have gone from a four bay NAS, to a two bay NAS and now a small box about 5 x 1.5 x 0.5 inches.
The plan is to use it as my main source, rendering the NAS as a backup. I also have another older WD hard drive that I will still back up to which is about ten years old. Not sure how long it will last which is another reason for buying the SSD.
Next plan is to buy another one for my photos, which to me are more precious as you can’t get them back. They are backed up in the cloud as well being stored primarily on my computer and backed up to another hard disc and the NAS.
The older hard drives are vulnerable and although I’ve not had one fail it is always a concern. This is the main reason I changed the NAS after about six years use.
I never thought I would become a geek but my love of music and photography has changed that I have to admit.

M.2's have become so cheap over the last year or so. The 1tb WD I used in my new build a few months back is now about 50% what I paid for it

Like you say, small, cool running and silent, whats not to like?

That is a bargain compared to a few months ago.
