Prostate Cancer

Post by The Kaptain »

There was an excellent bit on Prostate Cancer on todays (Monday 12th June) BBC Breakfast. I thought I knew about Prostate Cancer but there was a lot of new information thats come out in the last 10 years. It has been uploaded to Youtube so I have linked it below

If you cant be bothered to watch it (and there is no excuse for not watching it) heres the précis. If you are Black and over 45 or White and over 50 get your GP to give you a PSA blood test NOW.

Theres also more info on https://prostatecanceruk.org/ and the BBC Website

Don't be a wuss, DO IT!

I had a scare 15 years(ish) back. Turned out it was 'just' an enlarged prostate which was 'shaved' under a local.

I've not had a PSA for a while now (covid and all that) So I have poked my GP back into action as its not worth leaving

Yup, do it. Wife had been "badgering" me for years cos I kept pausing films we watched. Long story, prostate gone but not all the cancer, 4 years on I'm still OK but levels rising and will probably need radiotherapy soon.

If I'd not listened to the boss I'd probably not be enjoying my K Rad 2!

No harm in resurrecting this thread in light of the current experience of the King.

I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at an early stage due to a dilligent Doctor and I was able to to be treated very quickly with Braccytherapy. It will be two years this April since the treatment and my PSA levels are satisfyingly low. As per the OP's comment, I would very much encourage all in the age bracket to have the test. An old school friend of mine took action too late and they are now living on borrowed time. If they could have one wish fulfilled, it would be to have had a test far sooner.

Thank you for sharing and reminds us all mostly of a particular age to guard against this silent killer.

It's vital for men of a certain age to have regular checks.

It's coming up to four years since I was diagnosed and had a prostatectomy.

I was so lucky because there was a tumour growing in the surface of my prostate that could have easily spread. It was caught just in time - a narrow escape.

It was only because the husband of one of my wife's colleagues was seriously ill with prostate cancer that I had visited the GP for a PSA test. That led to a scan that picked up the anomaly.

Prostate cancer is so common in older men. Two friends, one in his fifties the other about seventy were also diagnosed within a few months of me.

Don't wait till it's too late. Get checked out now.

Thanks, James.

I hesitated about getting the test for years and probably would have gone on doing so if not for hearing about the husband of my wife's colleague..

Absolutely agree, PSA test should be offered to all men of a certain age. The trouble is that the PSA test is not very reliable and can give both false positives/negatives. So the surgery insist you have an appointment with the Doctor first so he can explain all this. I have recently had this discussion but eventually he agreed to approve the test.
