I slung LINN an email about the hinges
HelplineLinn wrote: Hi James,

Thank you for your e-mail

The hinges on the LP12-50 are different from the standard hinges and made specifically for this special edition turntable. The hole spacing is different where it mounts to the plinth.

Oh well I’ve just replaced mine and the money will go elsewhere.
:smt013
LINN have lost it now. :smt009
I don’t really believe them they get it wrong all the time.
There are posts around where Gilad has told people they are all sold but the application for order form is still on the website. :smt017
And the Keel now has a seperate mounting collar bolted from underneath now.
They must have missed the old lossy Armboard fitting
Sorry for the crappy pic but you get the idea Four seperate bolts. :smt018

Dare I say its cheaper to machine if the collar is not part of the KEEL?

... but 4 bolts? That seems crazy

Looks like it to me as well. Why make every part of the LP12 50 unique to just that product? All that R&D, CNC programming and tooling gone to waste

Hi James
I’m very disillusioned “as well “
Looks like many of these new features might be the norm but I don’t know where the price comes in.
There are a lot of new designed parts and I can’t imagine it only being for a limited number.
Maybe this is the way forward but as I’ve examined this new effort and it seems the only parts that are not unique is the arm cart and bearing.and whatever Urika you want.
I’ve seen a drawing of that new power switch all CNC and can’t imagine it being a 250 piece only.
Maybe this is the same as new Naim classic it’s all change. :smt009

No need to feel depressed. After all, your turntable sounded excellent before the LP12-50 was announced and I expect it still sounds excellent. Go and put a record on and wallow in the music and forget about this visually odd anniversary model! :smt020

Hi James
Firstly don’t feel depressed the good advice from Clive I can only echo.
Your deck isn’t broken and still sound as super as it did before.
This is a LTD Edition with a huge price tag and I don’t like it.Obviously there are going to be spin-offs from its design changes for example the new version of keel with separate arm collar “ Why “ it’s putting something back in they said was better out.
In a way rather than depressed I’m a bit more relaxed as I was in the what’s new next chase.
My mind has been settled for me and I don’t like the way it’s going so I’m pretty relaxed.
I’ve had what they describe as TOTR or Klimax twice now and always found something I liked in the new upgrades but since they went silly and esoteric with the new cartridge range for example it clear they have lost their way and only interested in lifestyle products now and the many years of enthusiastic support from the likes of us isn’t good enough any more they know better.
I’m glad I’ve got my deck to level where it didn’t get silly and will enjoy as is and if need be when the time comes and I go deaf I’ll have no hesitation in downgrading to something in the cartridge line that is more easily and affordable serviceable.
I’m happy to have my LP12 in Real mode and not Bling mode.

Exactly, but what I meant was if this is going to be the basis for the 'normal' LP12, obviously nothing will be backwards compatible with us with the 'old' LP12 so whats going to happen with the spares? I can't see LINN carrying two lines of spare parts can you? Servicing will obviously still be OK with Peter but what if he needs parts that are no longer available?

Its the same with NAIM with the new Power Supply not being backwards compatible with products which use a HiCap or Supercap

(yes I am in a gloom and doom mood, but blame LINN)

From what I can work out all the basic guts are the same. Bearing , inner and outer hub and springs and grommets.
I hardly think everything will disappear as linn say they will always support the deck.
This is Ltd edition and I’m sure some of the tweaks might trickle down to new standard components.
Mind you they said that when they did amps then told me to bin mine when packed in. :smt009

Spot on Jim - but I'm not worried about the LP12 going the same way as the amps did. Apart from the cart nothing else really goes wrong (wears out) and I think that if it does it will remain fixable (by someone anyway) for long after we all shuffle of this mortal coil ........ :smt023 :smt023 :smt023

Nothing to stop us buying up future service gear.
Really how often does a deck need rebuilt if not upgrading or changing something.
My LP12 Ekos mk 1 and Troika wasn’t touched for over 20 years in one spell.
I recalibrated my arm and cleaned my belt and pulley then checked the oil once a year.
There is far too much nonsense about playing records it isn’t witchcraft.

Looking at the pics of the LP12-50 one thing that bugs me is the logo on the lid does not sit directly above the spindle and having a circular logo makes it look kind of like it should. Really I'd prefer a lid with no logo at all, it is only there to hide the plastic moulding entry point.

Also if you are going for rounded edges maybe the lid should be round in 3 dimensions, this one only cost £30 and they managed it:
