Ok, I added another strip of the black tape provided to make it wider.

It’s now calibrating at 45.

Good it now works but the strip you’ve been provided with doesn’t look right it should be able to make a square like the one in the above picture.
Probably a photo effect but your platter doesn’t seem to have the same contour as in the above picture. :smt017
Glad if we managed to help your most welcome. :smt023

This was the only tape the dealer provided in the kit. I didn’t think to double it up until I saw your photos.

Yes, thank you all for the assistance. The LP12 is still far from optimized, but I can start to enjoy listening on it now, and that’s the first step.

I’ll be continuing the journey.

Great that you’ve got it going and I’m sure it’s been a learning curve.
As you get more interested in the format you’ll pick up little tips that improve things and make you think about the setup.
You’ve done very well if you don’t have any if the special tools or a jig.
I’m not sure how stripped down it all was when you got it.
One thing for sure is that the Cymbiosis setup guides are a great help especially where there might not be a local dealer.
Well done and enjoy. :smt023

That looks like the felt strips for the Trampolin. Glad you’ve got it working.

Hello everyone,

The felt strips worked for a few months, but today the lp12 suddenly won’t keep speed.

Apart from it sounding awful and being stuck in a groove, what makes you think it’s a speed issue? Have you checked the cartridge for damage to the cantilever?

Does the switch on the deck dim, or is it constantly bright? If you’re convinced it’s a speed issue, have you checked that the tape is still in place? If yes, try unplugging the power supply from the mains for 10 minutes and then power it up again.

Sorry, no reason to think speed was an issue. Noob knee-jerk reaction.

1. The light was dimming
2. I’ve unplugged and will wait a bit
3. Checked the cartridge, am I missing something or perhaps the needle looks broken?

It’s a very poor photo but from what’s available I don’t see a tip at all compared to this stock photo

This is the second needle broken since I started this journey. What should I be looking out for? Can tonearm settings cause this?

Looking at your photo, I would say you’re correct in that the stylus has broken. You’re either incredibly unlucky or you’re doing something to cause it. I’ve never had this problem, or seen it, in over 40 years.

Tonearm settings shouldn’t cause this. How are you cleaning the stylus?

I just use the same carbon fiber brush for vinyl to gently move any dust on the stylus.

I also installed both cartridges myself since they were sent by the distributor separately.

Can either be the cause?

Not sure what phonostage your using but trial and error fitting a cartridge of that expense isn’t a good idea.
I think I’d go for a MM cartridge perhaps an AT VM95e.
It will give great performance and get you into working on the deck.
I imagine your removing the arm from the deck for cartridge changes and using an alignment protractor for setting the cartridge position in the headshell. :smt017

I’m currently using kendo, arko, lingo, trampolin, kore, sondek.

I’ll look into the AT VM95e right away.

I didn’t remove the tone arm since the screws were relatively straightforward to bolt. I used an alignment guide that looked like this.

Can you post a photo of the brush please?

The fact that you installed the cartridges is unlikely to be the cause - it’s much easier to damage the cantilever than to dislodge a stylus, especially as the cantilever looks nice and straight.

That is no good for overhand to work out the distance back and forth for stylus alignment.
The arm should be removed for changing cartridges as excessive forces can ruin the arm bearings.

The below picture is only an example.

Regarding installing a pickup with a built-in tonearm. I used to be of the opinion that the tonearm should be removed. However, the forces used were what I now consider excessive. The Ekastatik is tightened with 0.4Nm, not really a lot of force. The arm, in that case the Ekos/SE should be able to withstand this, as I have not heard of or experienced any complaints so far, as I have attached the Ekstatik without removing the arm.

You were lucky as far as I’m concerned as well as many dealers it’s a very big gamble. :smt018
The forces required are in a different plane to that in being normally used.
Your money you’re gamble the damage could be done.

I don't doubt that. As a dealer, I would be much more cautious. I ask privately and in those cases I have not heard any objections. Caution is always advisable.

I understand.

I will do this moving forward.

How can I check if the bearings are still ok? Could this have caused the damage to the stylus?

Complete misalignment can cause extreme stylus wear and not removing the arm can cause drastic damage to the bearings,
The only way to check is to start fresh and listen.
I’m amazed your dealer isn’t on the case to do this for you or at least teach you the basics. :smt023

My nearest dealer is a plane right away. I had to ask someone to bring the linn unit back while on holiday. The dealer just guided me remotely.

Is there a way to check if the current state of bearing is acceptable? Slide the bias to zero?

No just have to set up again with a new cartridge I’d suggest much cheaper than the kendo you’ve been through 2 already in no time.
Usually the way to check for sticky bearings is to take the arm off the deck and do a swing test but all this us really for the dealer to do and I find it amazing he is happy to just send you out mail order stuff at these prices so easily damaged or not set up properly.
