If I want Organik in particular, it's not possible with Exakted 140s without Klimax Exaktbox6 - 2 of them! And I like the idea of Klimax twins and I'd need 4 of them.
Etc. Etc.

As I said in my piece on my 10 year affair with my 140s, I have no other serious issues with them. They have served me well. I could go back to passive but I do think they only truly show their capabilities when driven active. So we're back at the channels problem.

Not a 3 Body Problem (I've just watched series 1, and very enjoyable it was), but a 4 Way Problem 😀
This is exactly the reason why I didn’t go down the (dead-end?) Exakt route.

I’ve kept my system purely analogue/Aktiv. Every improvement on my front-end(s) has resulted in a better listening experience, rather than being limited by what Linn ‘say’ is SOTA at the speaker-end. I never liked Katalyst in my KDS/3.

I don’t think I’ll ever shift from my ‘old fashioned’ analogue system. Still spinning SACD’s, so probably no choice anyway! :smt023

I'm with Martin on the Analogue Aktiv thing but curiosity got the better of me and I'm entrenched in the Exakt thing now. I still have my Aktiv cards as a fall back and if that should happen I'd only need a single DAC to stay aktiv, that's a good thing for the wallet.

My M140s have been the best floor stander I've ever owned, Katan's being a favourite speaker to date! All upgrades have been audible through the M140's. No need for a sub, they go VERY deep when they need to. I've been thinking about the Kudos band wagon (S20a) but only really because of the lack of Exakt channels required to stay active. I really can't see what more they'd bring to the party. Some serious demoing would be needed to make me change and I'd need a failure of some sort to even consider it. That says more about the 140's than anything else.

The next upgrade that's got me thinking is a 2nd Exaktbox to try the dual mono exakt thing but that's a whole other ball game that would only happen should one fall into my lap!

My M140's are going no where fast. I love 'em!

Hello Everyone,

Just joined this forum and am about to buy a pair of 140s secondhand. They are currently in passive mode and I wish to run them in active mode via an Akurate Exaktbox-I. Can anyone advise as to whether or not I can change them to active myself or is this something I need my Linn dealer to do for me? If I can do this myself is there a description of the steps anywhere?
Also, can I ask what speaker cable most of you use when running active. I am assuming the best solution will be 4 lengths of K400 cable.

Am really looking forward to picking these up in a couple of weeks and moving from my current Kaber active setup (now 35 years old) to something more modern.

Thanks in adavance for any help you might be able to give me.

I have a pair in active/Exakt mode and they really came alive after being passive. I had my dealer convert mine, but if anyone is aware of a how to, I'd also be interested. I will be selling them imminently and think it may be easier if they are passive?
Anyway, shame you've already bought a pair, you could've had mine all set up next month!

Thanks timster,

If funds permitted I would probably be buying a pair of Kudos Super 20s but the cost of a new Exactbox-I and secondhand Akurate DSM Hub only allows for the 140s at present. Not that I think the 140s are deficient but having heard both the Kudos are on another level. I did consider sticking with my Kabers but the deal I have found on the 140s seems a good one.

Really appreciate the thought about yours so have sent you a PM as I have not yet fully committed to the other purchase.

Welcome @russelc

You will love your M140 in Exakt mode driven by an AEB-i.

Converting M140s from passive to active mode is quite easy and you won’t require a Linn dealer:

Only tool you will need is a screwdriver and possibly a pillow :D
Once you have removed the screws from the back panel of the box you just have to switch some jumpers on the crossover which you cannot do wrong.
In case of need I can post some photos.

However be careful once you have switched to active mode:
1. please double or better triple check that all drivers are connected to the right output of the AEB-I
2. You must never use the passive mode “Connection plates” for the four 140 inputs.

Otherwise you might seriously damage the AEBi and/or the 140 drivers

Thanks. Activ to Passive just reverse it. But that tick is interesting. Hope it's not permanent ink so it can go back to passive!

Yes, swapping setup between active and passive is easy: Due to the design of the connecting plugs it is physically impossible to make any mistake

I have done this change a couple of times now and it doesn‘t take more than about 5 minutes per speaker - it would be even faster if the back panel wouldn‘t be secured with so many screws :D

Going through my box of bits for the 140s I came across these. It is possible they aren't part of them or their packaging but I can't think what else they could be. There are 14 of them, which is a bit odd.
Can anyone identify them please?

Pinched this from another thread.

Thanks for this. I suppose I look for completeness. The T5 goes down to 23Hz, the 140s to 55, so it has been beneficial.
The Super20s go down to 30. Perhaps the extra 7 isn't a big loss. But I'll find out.
At the end of the day, 1.6k for the Exaktbox had always seemed excessive to me. Especially as it only has the standard DAC!

I should add that hanging it off the bass amp into Hi-Level hasn't been too difficult to integrate. That may ve because it's been handling much lower frequencies with not much overlap. If I turned the T5 down to minimum xover of 32, it may work just as well.

We shall see!
I'm curious as I also accepted the lower end being 55hz, after all that's what the Linn spec sheet says. However trying to understand this.

'Linn describes the Majik 140 as a four-way design, but you can see in fig.4 that the woofer's output actually duplicates that of the midrange unit in the 80–160Hz octave, rolling off with a second-order slope above that region. The woofer's response has a sharp notch at 36Hz that the impedance-magnitude trace in fig.1 confirms is the tuning frequency of the rear-facing port (footnote 1). The output of the port itself (green trace) peaks between 25 and 50Hz, suggesting good low-frequency extension. When I listened to the 1/3-octave warble tones on Editor's Choice, the 140's output was respectable down to the 40Hz band, with still some useful bass output apparent at 32Hz. Commendably, there was very little "doubling" audible; the Majik 140's woofer must produce relatively little distortion. With the reflex port sealed, the woofer's low-frequency rolloff (not shown) is almost identical to that of the midrange unit.'
