Speaker Audition

Post by DiggyGun »

Back out to Cultured Audio again next Saturday.

The friend I went with for the Kudos Sigao Drive Crossover demo wants to go back and audition some speakers.

Think he has his eye on some ATC Floorstanders.

Will let you know as to how he gets on.

I auditioned a pair of ATC 40A's during my new speaker quest a few years ago so I would be interested in hearing how your friend found them. When I auditioned them I found them very detailed which i liked but they sounded harsh and far too bright with little warmth so they were tiring to listen to for more than a couple of LPs. For the demo they used a Selekt level LP12 and a Selekt dsm and as I use Linn gear myself I knew the source would 'fit' my ears.
Linn LP12 keel karousel tramp, Urika 2, ARadikal2, Ekos se/1, dv-Karat 17dx
Linn Akdsm3 with Utopik
Goldnote PA10x2 (run as mono blocks)
Heed Obelisk dt dat
Kudos 606 + ks1
Various Audioquest tellurium and ifi connects

A friend has the ATC 40A's paired with a McIntosh C22 Mk. V preamp and a Thorens TD1600 turntable. Nothing harsh or bright there, very pleasant in fact. The ATC SCM100A's we listened to in the shop (with a Naim Turntable and preamp) are some of the best speakers I've ever heard.

I must admit I was suprised that they sounded as they did to me during my demo because ATC has a very good reputation both as studio and home speakers. I know everyone's ears are different and it could be they just didn't suit me I gave them a good 2 hours but in the end it was what it was. Life would be boring if we all liked the same thing :D

Sometimes speakers that can sound fantastic are very difficult to get right in one’s own listening room. I love Magnepan speakers, but they simply don’t work in a smallish cottage.

I liked ATCs when I heard them, but in the end went for Spendor. I guess I like that BBC presentation. In the end speaker choice is an extremely personal thing and a home audition essential.
Gramophone: Linn Klimax LP12, ADSM/3+KCT & Spendor D9s
Juke Box: JRiver, Chord Blu2/Dave/Etude & Harbeth P3ESR-XD
Wires: Van Damme speaker leads, Canare & Linn interconnects
Network: Eero Router, HP Switches, Connectix Cat6a & BJC Cat5e
