Best headphones around £300?

Post by Mouldy Old Dough »

I have a pair of Grado SR325X at the moment, but they have developed a fault with the 3.5mm Jack plug after being used very lightly since buying them last October. Not sure if I am happy with that build quality, so might be looking for something else. I will be using them with my Akurate DSM.

Yes, I have contacted Amazon and the seller. Amazon said they would arrange a refund, but the seller said that I need to return them to let Grado repair them. Which I’m not too happy about.

Which is why I am possibly looking at a different set if I get a refund.

Take the refund then it’s not your problem.
I can’t suggest as I don’t use cans but I didn’t want to see you ripped off. :smt018 :smt023

Sub Forum open for Musical Earwarmers. I don't know how much use it will get, so its just here for a trial period.

What are the thoughts on Sennheiser HD660S2?

They are on offer on Amazon just now at a substantial reduction.

I'd just repair the headphones myself. How hard could it be? I don't like sending things back. I guess no one does really. :D

The Beyerdynamic Amiron seems to get a better review than the Sennheiser set.

I am not one for subjective reviews as you can end up with the reviewers favourites rather than ones you are really happy with, Of course, comments on build quality and electrical specifications for matching for your headphone amplifier are useful.

My choice after audition was Audeze. These are planar magnetic head-fi and sound more real to me than the other earspeakers I tried. You may or may not like this type of design, but it could be worth a try. Headphones, like any type of speaker, are a personal choice: I love Magnepan speakers, but can’t accommodate them (I have some MG12s in storage); I find BBC designs equally beguiling and better for domestic harmony - with headphones these constraints don’t apply.

The Dan Clark Aeon RT are close to your price target and truly excellent headphones for the price. I own two Dan Clark headphones, the Stealth and the original Aeon. The Aeon have been trouble-free for 7 years. Everyone's head is different of course, but the Dan Clark are also the most comfortable I've owned, and I've been through a variety of Audeze, Sennheiser, AKG, Denon, Grado, etc. FWIW, the Audeze sounded great, but I found them to be too heavy for me for extended listening.

Maybe I should dig out my Jecklin Float 2’s. I bought them when I bought my original Linn kit 30 years ago. They cost about £100 then but I thought they sounded terrible and hardly used them.

I had a pair of them too, they were cool and certainly drew the comments, but sound wasn't the best.

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic Amirons coming today. Got them reduced as refurb units from the distributor for £309. I was listening to the Grado's last night and they do have a good sound, but I will compare them and keep what is best.

So far, the Amirons sound fantastic but they seem quite a bit quieter than the Grados. Would that be to do with the input ratings and do they need a better headphone amp? I am just using the headphone output of my Akurate DSM, which is plenty loud for the Grados. Detail and separation is much better with the Amirons.

I do have a small iFi headphone amp that I can maybe hook up, but I would have thought that the Linn headphone amp would be better than that?

I've been using the Focal Clear MG for a few months now and I'm absolutely loving them. They're incredibly comfortable, sound amazing, and have a great build quality. They're a bit more expensive than your budget, but I think they're worth the extra money. When I was looking for mine, I actually found a pretty good deal here (https://www.dealsandstealstoday.com/view-your-deal/) It helped me save a bit, so it might be worth checking out if you're trying to stick closer to your budget!
