Linn 350P - Active or Passive

Post by Coppersmith »

Hi, just purcahsed a set of 350P's, is there a way of telling if they have been altered for Active rather than the standrd passive config? My current 242's have block connectors that you move on the internal circuit board to change over... are the 350's similar?
Dont want to connect them up to my amps until I'm certain.

If the speakers have binding posts the chance it is somehow still fully active is 0. If you have bought them from a Linn dealer there should be no worries. Mind you: the bass units are always active in a 350.

Surely where you bought them from should know.
It’s a big investment to go in blind. :smt017
Post the serial numbers on here and we can do a dealer history check.
Or contact the Linn helpline. :smt023

Thanks both for responses,

Jim, I distance bought these, not been delivered yet... I have auditioned 350s a few times and like the sound but always been out of my reach. Local dealer has a set for £9k, found these ones on e-bay from a high street dealer in London for nearly half that.. trade in to clear... Will call them on Monday to see if they know how they are set up.

Utlover, I'm no expert and may have the terminology wrong but with Linn you can set the speakers to work with the Activ cards you put in the amplifiers then the crossovers in the speakers are by passed. Like you I always think Actve speakers have the amlification built in but Linn seems to be different  when set up like this you stilll use the binding posts.

If any help they were usually designated by name and the price was very different.
350P was passive
350A was active.
Not sure about mods with these. :smt017

Thanks Jim, there definately the 350P passive with the built in bass amplifier, just checked the website for the dealer, they sell Linn and service LP12s, looks like a nice shop.... will need to visit next time I'm in London, not far from my brothers house.

Just had another look at the photos and they have the binding post links installed so pretty sure they are in standard passive form, will call to check ayway,

You need to change the connectors positions from passive to active, same as 242. So probably have to open the back plate out to confirm first and do the conversion.
I have the 350p crossovers for an unfinished project.

So the speakers finay arrived, UPS delivery.... rescheduled several times before eventually arriving. 2 guys on the truck, one watched as the other struggled with the weight of them. The boxes looked as if they had done a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson, speakers ok thankfully.

Gave the dealer a quick call, when they got them they were active, they changed them back to passive and had demo'd them to someone who was interested. They sent me the Active cards as well, which was nice of them... now I'm thinking about upgrading my amps
