Hello, from Autumnal Bedfordshire

Post by bollada »

Hi all - this looks like a warm and friendly place for Linn centric HiFi discussions. Lots to discuss, but not in my intro post!
Long time former Meridian user, but they seem to have lost their way in the market now :? , so the Linn Selekt/Organik has found its way into my home to replace the multi-function Meridian as source/pre-amp/DAC/processor. Just delighted with the upgrade :D , but then 20 years of development in technology-centric audio components will do that for you. Just back from the Proms last night (Tchaikovsky 6 by "Chineke!" was a marvel) - and for the first time in my hifi life, I was NOT instantly disappointed with the difference between live and home. I know I'm still in the honeymoon stage with the new kit, but long may it last!!
Looking forward to chatting with y'all.

Welcome, John.

I used to have Meridian CD player, tuner, amps, etc. a very long time ago. I already had an LP12 and, after contacting a local Linn dealer to service it, gradually changed everything to Linn. I found the Meridian gear sounded pristine and clear, but that Linn was a bit more exciting.
LP12* > Next Generation KDSM Hub with Utopik > Klimax Organik Exaktboxes > Solo 500s** > Komris
*with Keel, Radikal 1 (Machined), Cirkus, Ekos SE/0, Kandid and Urika II
**with original 1999 Switched Mode Power Supplies, i.e. not Dynamik

Yes - Meridian was great gear in its time but has been overtaken IMO. When I first got the Bryston Amp's with the Meridian, I had a concern about an overly bright top end (glass-like on occasion). Some recommended to combine warm valve pre-amps with the Bryston sound, but I wasn't comfortable with that: perhaps trying to compensate errors..? The change to Linn showed that the issue was the Meridian source being over-bright, and the Bryston's had simply exposed that: they are certainly not overly bright amps - just brutally honest. A dramatically more lifelike Linn Selekt/Organik has brought everything together nicely.

Thanks for the welcome!

Thanks for the welcome. I went for Edition after a comparison demo. It wasn’t exactly night and day, but it was a significant enough SQ difference, that I knew that I would constantly regret the decision had I gone Classic! Could I have spent the cash difference better elsewhere? :smt102 Possibly, but I had reached the end of the DAC demo journey, and the Linn was head and shoulders above the rest for my tastes. So choosing Edition was the luxury icing on an already yummy cake.
Source is NAS streaming from a collection of ripped CDs & downloads, for the critical listening. Blu Ray/Streaming for occasional non-critical movie viewing, but this contributed to my decision for the Selekt, with its modular surround components.
Cheers, JB.

Interesting re. Edition over Classic. I was put off by the price tag. More than twice the price seemed a stretch and at the time I couldn't afford it. "Significant" SQ upgrade... it may be on my radar again!
